Daisy Daily for the Week of December 16, 2019

Daisy Staff,

Hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful weekend!

As we begin the week of Dec. 16, please remember:

  • We will review Student Data in Grade-Level Meetings this week.
  • The joint ELA/Math/Special Education Department-Based PLC meeting will take place after school this Wed., Dec. 18, from 3:15-4:15 pm.  Other Department-Based PLCs will also take place as scheduled.
  • Students and Staff are invited to participate in "Spirit Week" this week, if you wish, as previously announced in flyers.  Here's a copy for your handy reference:

Please help us welcome Rebecca (Becca) Corcoran, who joins us on Mon., Dec. 16, in the position of Behavior Technician.  She comes to us with much experience from the Madison Public School District.

Also, please know that we are inviting Daisy families and staff members to donate gently used (or new) books to the "Read To Grow" non-profit foundation as their inventory is very low during this holiday season.  The group is in need of gently-used or new books for siblings of newborns (ages 1-9), which are distributed throughout Connecticut hospitals.  "Read to Grow" gifts the family of each newborn with a new book, but would also like to allow siblings to choose books for themselves as well.  One of our Daisy volunteers, Lynn Nathan, informed us of this need during this holiday season.  Hopefully, this is something that we can help with, in the spirit of giving.  We'll have flyers ready to go home to each family and each staff member on Monday.

Please remember:
Monday, Dec. 23:
  • Seasonal Sing-a-long at 10 am in the gym
  • School-wide Pajama Day
  • Early Dismissal at 1 pm
As always, please check our Daisy Staff Google Calendar for daily updates and please let me know about events that you'd like to see listed on the calendar for the good of all:

Wishing all a wonderful week ahead with our students and each other!

Warmly,
Ruth
Thanks to all who were able to join us for the
Staff Holiday Party on Saturday evening!

Daisy Daily for the Week of December 2, 2019

Daisy Staff,

Welcome to December!

Hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful, long holiday weekend.

Thanks to all for everything that you contributed to another "Good News" Assembly before the break.  Our students and staff shared ideas on "Kindness" in so many fabulous ways.

As we prepare for the week ahead, here are a few highlights:

  • I am delighted to inform you that our long-term substitute nurse, Kayla Johnson, RN, will join us as an official employee of Westbrook Public Schools on Monday.  She has served our students, families and staff so well in our School Health Office during Bianca Boccaccio's maternity leave.  Bianca has decided not to return after the birth of her baby girl, and we wish her and her family the very best.  Kayla was the unanimous choice of our interview committee and we wish her the very best as she continues her work with us, now as an official WPS employee.
  • On Monday, we will also welcome a new Office Secretary to Daisy.  Lisa (Johnson) Sizer joins us in our front office in a full-day position, having previously served as a paraprofessional at WHS.  Please welcome Lisa, who has a rich background in office experience as well.  Thanks so much to our interview committee and our superintendent, who has supported this very timely appointment of Lisa to a full-time position.
  • Certified Staff Members: Please plan to use the time allotted for Wednesday's after-school meeting (3:15-4:15 pm) to work on Report Cards and Progress Reports.

As always, please check our Daisy Staff Google Calendar for daily updates and please let me know about events that you'd like to see on the calendar for the good of all:

Daisy Staff,

Welcome to the week of Thanksgiving!!! How could it possibly come so fast?  It will be a quick week, so here goes.......

Our Daisy Dash 5K was a resounding success on Saturday with a record number of runners (345) and staff members attending!  Thanks SO MUCH to all of our Daisy family who showed up to run, walk, help out, cheer on our students, run with our students, etc., etc.!  You all were fabulous and your presence made such a positive impact on our students and families!
Special thanks to our core group of PTO families who made this event possible.  Please thank the following parents, especially, when you see them: Jodi Ouellette, Cassie Morrison, Tovah Vincent, Clint and Melissa Bonner, Jennifer Finezza, Laura Furcola, etc., etc.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and without this dedicated team, it would not have been possible.

We will also share some of our "BE KIND" posters at the assembly. Full agenda to follow....

Mrs. Salerno's third graders wrote about all the ways they are grateful for their classmates.  Each student took home these wonderful messages from peers as an amazing keepsake.
Thanks so much to classroom parents,
Corey Ehrlich and Tiffany Suski,
 for organizing this!

Please send any completed logs that students have brought in to the office.  Also, we will recognize random acts of kindness and friendship at each grade level.  Please send me an e-mail regarding 1-2 students from each class who have demonstrated kindness (however simple).  This is something that we will continue to recognize throughout the school year.  Thanks!
  • In conjunction with our "Good News Assembly" on Friday, we are also planning a School Spirit/Positive Message Day.  Students and staff members are encouraged to wear school spirit wear, Westbrook purple or any clothing with positive messages regarding kindness, etc.  It's always fun to read these messages on shirts, etc., and this will be very visible at our assembly.  A message regarding this Spirit Day was sent home via School Messenger to Daisy Families & Staff.
  • Friday is also our Semi-Annual "Bike/Walk to School Day."  Students must be accompanied by an adult and bike riders MUST wear helmets.  Staff members are encouraged to join our students and families on the walk to school from the Ted Lane Parking Lot this Friday.  Those participating are asked to meet at 7:45 am for the walk to school.

  • PLEASE remember that notices, students work, etc., should go home EVERY day in student folders.  There are no longer any folders designated as "Wednesday Folders."  We would like information to get home to families as soon as possible so we don't hold folders in school until Wednesday distribution as in the distant past.  Likewise, parents/guardians send notes and important information to school on a daily basis in these folders, so please remember to check for such.
  • Please remember to share Kids' News with your students and join in the Pledge of Allegiance each morning.  The link to Kids' News is on Ms. Godfrey's web page as well as our Daisy home page.
